It seems like this would be the easiest thing to trace back to the source. Whoever thought they were going to get away with this is an idiot.

On the side note gotta say that the chips look quite well. Someone that did this for sure took time to make it look legit enough.
Newegg is (wouldnt imagine anything else from them) refunding the ppl that got duped.

Off topic: The only thing that makes me kinda nervous is what will happen with egg after they go public... Don't want my fav toy store go downhill cos of some CEO wants more $$$...

When you actually look closely at the chip its so obvious. None of the edges are straight, clearly on the bottom there is no plated connections, you can bend it in half. All the stuff in there seems to be so it weighed the right amount and if xrayed would look like it had stuff in it. Clearly once you open the box its completely obvious you got duped.

I don't blame NewEgg for this but they are being stupid with how they are dealing with it. I guess they also don't want to openly blame a supplier for purposefully trying to sell them fake processors without any proof. But they could still admit that they are fake processors, not just demo boxes, and are investigating where they came from.

Intel has already refuted NewEgg's statement saying they are indeed fake processors and not just demo boxes. So by continuing to stick by that story NE is looking dumber and dumber.

I agree with You pope but I doubt that every company selling computer products, like newegg, tigerdirect, buy, zipzoomfly, etc. is checking every single box out of hundreds or thousands they receive. The glance at the box gives you the feel the box is legit. Only after looking closer You can find out its not. I will repeat again that the person that did this took time to make it looks legit - box, weight, look, etc. (thumbs up for effort  :buttkick: for intentions)

And there is an update from egg - a statement:

"Newegg is currently conducting a thorough investigation surrounding recent shipments of questionable Intel Core i7-920 CPUs purchased from Newegg.com.

Initial information we received from our supplier, IPEX, stated that they had mistakenly shipped us “demo units.” We have since come to discover the CPUs were counterfeit and are terminating our relationship with this supplier. Contrary to any speculation, D&H Distributing is not the vendor that supplied us with the Intel Core i7-920 CPUs in question.

Newegg’s top priority is to proactively reach out to all customers who may have been affected to ensure their absolute satisfaction. We have already sent out a number of replacement units and are doing everything in our power to resolve the matter promptly and with the least amount of inconvenience to our customers.

We have always taken pride in providing an exceptional experience for each customer, and we apologize for any inconvenience to our valued customers. We take matters like this extremely seriously, and are working in close cooperation with Intel and the appropriate law enforcement authorities to thoroughly investigate this incident.

(Received by email: Monday, March 8, 2010 – 7:26 PM EST)"

Looks good so far. The most important thing is all ppl duped will get the replacement.

That's better, their initial statement was really stupid, it's good that they put out this one that doesn't sound ridiculous.
